In vertical format, the island's shape is distinctive. A broad southern beach curves around to meet the marshy western shore, and the Cape Fear River channel runs along the north side. Shoal formations extend underwater to the east, giving the map a sense of the shifting sand that defines this coastline. The island sits alone in the frame, compact and self-contained, a strong focal point for a room.
