In horizontal format, the keys unfold as a series of low coral islands connected by bridges over open water. The Atlantic sits to one side, the Gulf to the other. Marathon and Islamorada anchor the middle, and Key West holds the southern tip, the last bit of US land before open ocean. The contrast between the thin chain of islands and the surrounding reef defines the composition.
